Ikea Almond Cake Found to Contain Fecal Bacteria

Chocolate almond cake with buttercream and butterscotch sold at the furniture giant Ikea was found to have coliform bacteria present––the same bacteria in mammal fecal matter. More than 4,000 pounds of cake tested positive for the contaminant and were destroyed by Chinese health officials. Though the Swedish-supplied cakes were destroyed more than two months ago and officials said none of the compromised products were sold in stores, Ikea has stopped selling the cakes in retail outlets. The recall spans 23 countries––not including the US––and is the latest Ikea food product to have made headlines; the store’s meatballs and sausages were recently found to contain horsemeat.
