An investigation conducted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals at a processing plant in Rockland, ME, recently spurred model and Twilight actor Kellan Lutz to write a letter of complaint to Linda Bean, the owner of Linda Bean’s Maine Lobster. The undercover footage shows workers forcibly separating lobsters’ heads from their abdomens and pressing their exposed organs to fast-moving brushes while the animals are still alive. “[The lobsters] don’t die right away,” says one worker. “I mean, they’ll live for hours.” In his plea, Lutz concedes that he is not a vegetarian, but says that it is cruel and inhumane to subject the animals to such torturous conditions before euthanizing them. “Even if you can’t relate to lobsters and crabs in the same way that you might to dogs or dolphins,” Lutz writes, “they also deserve to be spared unnecessary agony.”
