The expectant actress Kristen Bell noted her disapproval of confining pregnant pigs in gestation crates in a letter to Neil Dierks, the CEO of the National Pork Producers Council, reports The Humane Society of the United States. “I love being pregnant, but I can’t imagine how awful it would be under conditions like these … They’re cruel, inhumane, and totally out of whack with people’s values about how we ought to treat animals,” writes the star of Showtime’s House of Lies and the upcoming Movie 43. According to HSUS, nine states have passed laws that prohibit the use of gestation crates with pregnant pigs, and food companies McDonald’s, Burger King, and Oscar Mayer plan to eliminate them in the future.
