Laser Labels

Scientists are experimenting with a reliable new way to identify fruits and vegetables.

Those annoying labels you have to peel off fruits and veggies may be a thing of the past. The Agricultural Research Service and scientists at the University of Florida are testing a new technique called “laser etching” that uses a laser instead of a sticker to label fruit. It makes tiny holes in the outer cells of the fruit, kind of like a tattoo needle, and appears to be completely safe. The laser also seals these holes automatically, so the produce would not be more vulnerable to decay or pathogens. Another benefit? These “tattoos” cannot be changed or removed, which is great news for consumers who want to be sure about where their produce actually comes from.
