Maryland’s Great Seneca Creek Elementary School is the first in the state to be green-certified by the US Building Council. By installing waterless urinals and motion-censor faucets, using recycled building materials, and educating students about the environment, the school joins 1,000 others which have been approved or are awaiting approval by the organization. Currently, nine states require new schools to meet green-building standards, while others, like Massachusetts and California, offer financial incentives for going green.
