While mercury levels in fish have been a concern for some time, we haven’t known exactly how prominent mercury levels are in our scaly friends— until now. After testing fish from 291 bodies of water across the US, government scientists from the US Geological Survey found mercury in every single fish tested. That’s more than 1,000 fish that had some level of mercury in them, and a quarter of them had mercury levels that exceed the safe amount for consumption, as set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Stemming from this finding, the Interior Department says that mining operations are largely to blame, and that our country must protect our waterways. Protect your body while you’re at it, and cut out any pescetarian ways!
