As major food industry players such as McDonald’s and Oscar Mayer rid their supply chains of gestation crates, animal-welfare groups set their sights on Walmart, the nation’s largest purveyor of pork, encouraging the company to source from farms that do not use gestation crates. Mercy For Animals released a full-page advertisement in the Benton County Daily Record (Walmart’s hometown newspaper), that has a large image of a confined pregnant pig. In large, bold letters, the heading reads, “Walmart: Quit Stalling.” Below the picture, a caption explains the cruelty of gestation crates and lists the food companies that have eliminated them.
