Neuter-a-Thon

Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine is on a tour across Michigan, performing its annual, three-week long Neuter-a-Thon. The goal of the Neuter-a-Thon is to reach out to low-income families with animal companions in five cities throughout the state. The Neuter-a-Thon was first started in 1999, and now 24 students and volunteers participate in preventing the birth of unwanted animals. In addition to neutering, the vets at Neuter-a-Thon also provide vaccines for the companion animals. Michigan, which as of June 2010 had the second highest unemployment rate in the country, euthanizes more than 100,000 animals due to overcrowding at shelters.
