PETA Offers Detroit $100k to Serve Vegan Fare

Detroit recently became the largest US city to declare bankruptcy, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has offered to help chip away at the city’s nearly $20 billion debt, reports Michigan news outlet Detroit Free Press. PETA proposed donating $100,000 to the Motor City in exchange for vegan-only meals being served in the city’s government buildings. The animal-welfare organization’s president Ingrid Newkirk penned a letter to Detroit’s Mayor Dave Bing citing that healthier meals for city workers means Detroit could save money on employee health care. Newkirk also claimed that PETA would buy ads on public service vehicles, such as fire and garbage trucks, to ensure the city’s services continue to be funded. Mayor Bing’s office has yet to respond.
