Regardless of which brand wins the blind taste test, ditching sodas all together is likely the best bet for staying healthy. A new study found that Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi, and Diet Pepsi all contain levels of 4-methylimidazole, or 4-MEI, that are nearly five times higher than those allowed by California standards. The levels of 4-MEI found in these four sodas could result in five people out of 100,000 developing cancer, while California stipulates that additives be restricted to the possibility of causing one cancer case in 100,000 consumers. The Food and Drug Administration commented, saying that consumers would need to ingest 1,000 cans of soda per day to simulate the dosages administered to animals in the study.
