Researchers say UK citizens should consume less meat to save lives and the planet. In a report released in The Lancet medical journal, scientists suggest reducing the country’s meat consumption by 30 percent. Reducing livestock production, along with other green initiatives, would help the agricultural industry reach its proposed emissions reduction targets and allow the UK to reduce its carbon emissions 50 percent by 2030. Lowering the public’s intake of saturated animal fat would prevent 18,000 fatal heart attacks per year, a 17 percent reduction. However, Kenneth Cassman from the University of Nebraska argues that reducing meat consumption in rich countries will not effectively address global trends because meat demand is increasing in developing nations.
