On Monday, December 13, The Washington Post Health section posted a story on the growing trend of vegetarian children. The story, titled “Kids can thrive on a vegetarian diet, but parents need to pay close attention,” by Carolyn Butler, highlighted a survey from earlier this year that found three percent of eight to 18-year-olds were now vegetarian, up from 1.4 percent in 1995. Butler also quoted the Nutrition Adviser for the Vegetarian Resource Group, saying that two-thirds of those children were vegan. The story went on to emphasize that while children can thrive on a plant-based diet, parents need to pay close attention and ensure that the child is getting all the nutrients he or she needs.
