The UK’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition released a report recommending that citizens reduce red meat and processed meat intake to one serving per day in order to reduce bowel cancer risk. One serving of red meat per day is the equivalent of two slices of roast beef or two standard beef burgers. Studies have found that heme, a compound that gives red meat its color, has been shown to damage the lining of the colon. The recommendations also include eating a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, as well as getting regular iron level screenings.
