Victoria’s Secret supermodel Karlie Kloss recently visited the vegan brand Beyond Meat’s production facility in El Segundo, CA. There, Kloss—who is the founder of Kode with Klossy, an organization that aims to inspire young women to pursue male-dominated careers—met with Beyond Meat Senior Project Engineer Lina Pruitt to sample the plant-based burger and discuss female leadership. “It’s like evolved meat,” Kloss said in a video segment documenting her visit. “People don’t realize that there is so much science involved in the food industry.” Kloss continued the segment in the kitchen of this year’s Top Chef winner Brooke Williamson who has added the Beyond Burger to the menu of her Los Angeles restaurants. “It totally looks like real meat,” Williamson stated as she prepared the plant-based patty with Kloss. “I think that [the Beyond Burger] touches on so many reasons why red meat is not a necessary component to a menu.” In 2016, Beyond Meat debuted its Beyond Burger at one Whole Foods location in Colorado and has since expanded to thousands of points of distribution, and plans to debut in more than 50 countries this summer. “I have seen partnerships between plant-based products and very well-known chefs over the last year more than I’ve seen over the last 10 years.” Kloss ends the statement with a call for more inspired engineers to create “out-of-the-box” solutions to feed the growing world population.
