Rocky Coronado, owner of Rocky’s Road Brew food truck, will open brick-and-mortar restaurant Damelo Cafe in Detroit. In 2015, Coronado opened his food truck in Austin, Texas and moved it to Detroit, where he sells vegan tacos made with fillings such as fried avocado, al pastor, beef, and black beans. With Damelo Cafe, Coronado aims to make plant-based food accessible to Detroit residents. “I try to promote a plant-based diet because heart disease, cancer, [and] diabetes are rampant in the Latin American community and communities of color,” Coronado told Eater. Coronado is also considering adding a dry bar with non-alcoholic cocktails to Damelo to utilize the bar already set up in the space, and plans to host live music events. Coronado has applied for small-business grants and will, ultimately, sell Rocky’s food truck to help fund renovation of the cafe, which he intends to open this winter.
