CBS Sunday Morning reported on an orchestra based in Vienna, Austria that utilizes vegetables in place of instruments. The 12-person ensemble orchestra, founded in 1998, plays concerts worldwide using instruments made from vegetables, which “creates a musically and aesthetically unique sound universe.” The orchestra features instruments such as a carrot recorder, a zucchini trumpet, and a bean maraca. The Vegetable Orchestra’s website states that following a performance, the audience is offered vegetable soup. The orchestra plays a fusion of musical styles including contemporary, jazz, noise, dub, and experimental electronic.
