Fair-Trade Banana Binge
Chow down on the world’s favorite fruit and promote fair trade in one bite.
February 24, 2009
Being a savvy consumer means surveying not only what you are buying, but also how it was produced (check out our Food, Inc. feature in the January+February edition for a more in-depth investigation). If you’d rather take more immediate action, how about bingeing on bananas this weekend? In an effort to cultivate more compassionate consumption, UK-based Fairtrade Foundation is hosting the world’s biggest banana-eating attempt as part of their Fairtrade Fortnight. To qualify, you simply need to nosh on a fair-trade banana between noon on Friday and noon on Saturday. With more than 159,000 people signed up so far, it’s obvious they’re not monkeying around.
