On November 9, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a new Meatless Monday resolution, encouraging the city’s residents to take part in eating plant-based foods at least once a week to support sustainability efforts, encourage better health, and protect animals. National animal-welfare group Compassion Over Killing worked closely with council members on the initiative. “Every time we choose vegetarian foods, we’re helping build a kinder, cleaner, and healthier world,” says COK Campaigns Director Jaya Bhumitra. LA council members and resolution co-authors Ed. P Reyes and Jan Perry noted issues including global warming, battling disease and obesity, and improving self-awareness were all factors in moving the initiative forward. LA is now the third city in the United States to adopt the campaign, following Washington, DC, and San Francisco, CA.
