On Monday, restaurant-review survey organization Zagat listed the eight best meat-free restaurants in New York, ranging from well-established destinations to hot newcomers. The top spot went to shojin-style Japanese restaurant Kajitsu, lauded for its “Zen mood and phenomenal service.” Second and third place went to legendary falafel hole-in-the-wall Taïm and imaginative East Village spot Dirt Candy, respectively, with fourth and fifth place claimed by Pure Food & Wine and Hangawi. Vegan fine-dining kingpin Candle 79, its casual counterpart Candle Cafe, and Big Apple-mainstay Caravan of Dreams also made the countdown. Surprisingly snubbed: Blossom’s arsenal of eateries and the ever-popular Anjelica Kitchen.
