Investigation Reveals Cruelty on Canadian Egg Farm
Hidden footage from a McDonald’s egg supplier north of the border shows abusive workers and suffering animals.
October 21, 2013
Activist organization Mercy For Animals conducted an undercover investigation of Burnbae Farms—the sole egg-provider of McDonald’s Canada—from May to August of this year, revealing the atrocious living conditions and inhumane treatment of thousands of hens. The footage shows birds living in cramped wire cages, some of them suffering painful injuries, while others died and were left among the live hens. Baby chicks who were deemed sick or did not grow fast enough had their heads hit against a hard surface in an attempt to kill them, and were then thrown into a plastic bag. “The battery cages are overcrowded and the birds show extreme fear whenever a worker passes,” says Dr. Ian Duncan, a Canadian poultry expert. “The high number of trapped, sick, and injured birds in the cages is unacceptable.”
