Teen Activist Leads Veggie Burger School Campaign

Due to the tireless effort of Devin Phon, Deerfield High School now serves veggie burgers in its cafeteria, reports People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Phon, who is a member of his Massachusetts public school’s Animal Right’s Club, circulated a petition among students and administrators, and he later met with the principal and the cafeteria manager to negotiate the introduction of the meatless menu item. Phon’s victory was recognized by PETA’s youth division, peta2, which awarded him the Star Street Teamer Award. “Young people are leading the animal rights charge, and Devin is a trailblazer they can look to for inspiration,” says peta2 director, Marta Holmberg. Myriad schools across the country have recognized the health benefits of vegetarian food and have instituted meatless campaigns to bolster student’s physical and mental well-being and curtail the childhood obesity epidemic.
