The struggle against ag-gag legislature has reached a climactic point in Tennessee as Governor Haslam is forced to make a decision to approve, veto, or ignore a statute that will be criminalize undercover factory farm investigations. Since the law was passed by the state senate, Haslam has received nearly 4,500 emails and 1,800 phone calls opposing the bill, reports Nashville Public Radio on its website. Representative Andy Holt, one of the bill’s sponsors, heightened the controversy after The Tennessean blog published an email in which Holt referred to the investigations as “tape and rape” and likened them to the human trafficking of 17-year-old women.
