Animal-welfare organization Mercy For Animals has launched a campaign to expose the cruelties of the foie gras industry and urge web superstore Amazon not to sell the duck-liver product. On the campaign website amazoncruelty.com, an undercover video taken at Hudson Valley Foie Gras farm in New York, shows the process of ducks being force fed, the cramped cages that animals are forced to live in, and the high number of deaths caused by the inhumane feeding technique. The website also includes testimonials from a slew of veterinarians noting that foie gras is unnatural and causes extreme pain and suffering. Celebrities such as Kate Winslet, Paul McCartney, and even religious authorities including Pope Benedict XVI also speak out against the food industry practice that has been banned in California, Germany, Norway, and Switzerland.
