Under the direction of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County jails in Phoenix, AZ are taking steps to becoming completely vegetarian at meal time. Arpaio recently told Fox 10 Phoenix news station that the switch to substituting soy for beef in the prisons’ stew will save $100,000. This is the first change of many to come, he shares, as he plans for the entire jails’ meals to be meat-free. “Now, we got the key element and it’s why we don’t need meat: soy,” Arpaio announces as he prepares the stew on the news segment. While Fox 10 Phoenix anchor Troy Hayden expressed reservations about the beefless stew, Arpaio was enthusiastic and declared the dish tasty.
