In a letter sent yesterday to the dairy industry’s Milk Processor Education Program (“MilkPEP”), PETA asked the organization to stop supplying milk—one of the largest drains on California’s water supply—to food banks throughout the state. It is estimated to take 1,000 gallons of water to produce a single gallon of cow’s milk, amounting to 4.79 trillion gallons of water used last year in California alone. With the state experiencing one of the worst droughts in history, MilkPEP has been soliciting funds for a “milk drive” to send milk to California residents whose wells have dried up.
