A cow in Hudson, FL escaped a grim fate this week thanks to a passerby Samaritan and local law enforcement who had collapsed from the pressure put on her spine by her unborn calf. Body camera footage captured Pasco County Sherrif’s deputies arriving on scene to a citizen holding the head of a pregnant cow above water. When a passerby driving past the ranch spotted the cow—splayed on its side, head nearly submerged in a foot of water—he noticed her legs were rigid and her heart rate was skyrocketing. Deputies first found a log to help prop the animal’s head up and prevent her from drowning, then eventually utilized rope and straps to get the cow to safety. “It’s what we do,” Cpl. Scott Kenner, Pasco County Sherrif’s Department, said. “You go on to the next one. You could be saving a cow one day. You could be chasing a cow right after.” Once freed, the pressure on the cow’s spine was eased and she was relieved of her temporary paralysis. Tampa’s WFLA reports that the animal is doing fine and is expected to have a healthy calf.
