Campaign to Introduce Vegan Pancakes at IHOP Launches

National animal-rights group In Defense of Animals (IDA) debuted a comprehensive campaign to urge the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) to offer vegan options, including a push to create a vegan version of its famed pancakes. The petition asks that IHOP—with more than 1,500 locations nationwide—also expand its popular breakfast items to include animal-free menu items such as plant-based meats and egg replacers. “With a rapidly growing number of consumers choosing plant-based diets for ethical, environmental, and health reasons, it is an excellent time for IHOP to expand their menu to include vegan options,” IDA stated in their petition. The multifaceted initiative encourages supporters to submit personalized letters to IHOP executives. With food giants such as Starbucks and Chipotle launching plant-based alternatives to meet customer demands and build their environmentally-friendly images, IDA President Marilyn Kroplick stresses that IHOP should follow suit. “Scientific consensus asserts that animal agriculture is the leading cause of environmental destruction,” Kroplick said.
