World champion British boxer David Haye is making his final preparations at a training camp in Miami before his next match against Tony Bellew this Saturday. Affectionately referred to as “The Hayemaker,” the boxer went vegan in 2014 after watching a documentary about factory farming that changed his perceptions about eating animal products. “It started when I was injured and was researching the best diets to heal muscles,” Haye recently told local media outlet The Sun. “All roads kept leading back to a plant-based diet—and when you look at the horrible way animals are treated, that made it easier to switch.” Stirring up controversy amongst boxers before they fight is common within the sport—Hayes says it’s easier to fight someone when you aren’t exactly friends. As such, Bellew responded to the coverage of Hayes cruelty-free diet by stating, “I like meat, so, you know, meat! I like steak, I love chicken.” Haye made headlines last January when he returned to the ring after a 2013 shoulder injury, defeating his opponent Mark de Mori in a first-round knockout that took a mere 131 seconds. The sold-out boxing match between Haye and Bellew will be held on March 4, 2017 at the O2 Arena in London.
