Beloved Blackbird Pizzeria Expands to Second Location

Philadelphia-based vegan mainstay Blackbird Pizzeria announced plans to open a second location in the Northern Liberties neighborhood this spring. Blackbird will be housed in the space previously occupied by non-vegan Vietnamese restaurant Same Same and serve a menu identical to its flagship Society Hill location. Menu items will include pizzas topped with ingredients such as BBQ seitan, house-smoked tofu, and an assortment of vegetables in addition to salads, sides, desserts, and specialty sandwiches—including its award-winning Seitan Cheesesteak filled with rosemary and garlic seared seitan, grilled onions and green peppers, vegan whiz, and served on an artisan hoagie roll. Last weekend, Blackbird regained its title for Best Vegan Philly Cheesesteak during an annual contest held last weekend, beating out offerings from non-vegan restaurant Frankie’s on Fairview and competition newcomer Wiz Kid—a casual eatery opened by fine-dining restaurant Vedge inside a Whole Foods Market last October.
