Brooklyn, NY cafe The End recently filed a lawsuit against coffeehouse giant Starbucks for trademark infringement in regard to its unicorn frappuccino. Starbucks released the limited-time frappuccino—made with milk, syrup, and several sugary powders—in April, and Montauk Juice Factory (The End’s parent company) attorney Josh Schiller says the coffee chain appropriated the Unicorn Latte that the cafe developed in December. “Starbucks, with its thousands of coffee shops,” Schiller said, “launched a competing product with a similar look and name, and marketed it in the same channels where our client’s product became famous.” The End’s unicorn concoction was intended to be a “restorative” drink and is made with healthful ingredients (and sans animal products) including cashews, spirulina extract, spirulina powder, cold-pressed ginger, and maca root. The suit seeks unspecified compensation and a public apology from Starbucks.
