According to new research compiled by market insight company GlobalData, 70 percent of the world population is ditching meat—either reducing intake or eschewing it altogether—in favor of plant-based protein. “As consumers look to eat healthier and cleaner while reducing their impact on the planet,” Nicole Peranick of food industry marketplace New Hope Network said, “items like pea protein powder, plant-based burgers, nut-based cheese, jackfruit shredded ‘meat,’ and soy chorizo are popping up left and right on restaurant menus and in stores.” This new data is consistent with last year’s prediction by Allied Market Research that the global meat-replacement market will reach $5.2 billion by 2020 with a compounded annual growth rate of 8.4 percent. In the US, a survey conducted by the California Walnut Board in April found that 83 percent of Americans are willing to make meatless meals using nuts, legumes, beans, peas, and lentils in place of animal products.
