Last week, fashion brand Free People debuted its all-vegan summer 2017 lookbook. The brand partnered with animal-rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to create the cruelty-free styles, which feature leather-free sandals, faux leather jackets, straw hats, and silk-free printed slip dresses. The styles are modeled by social media influencers Bryana Holly, Michelle Weinhofen, and Sal Stowers—winner of the ninth season of America’s Next Top Model. “I think the world needs to know it’s so cruel what is happening behind closed doors to animals,” Stowers told Teen Vogue. Fashion brands are increasingly turning away from using animal products in their designs, as evidenced by Stella McCartney’s recent decision to replace silk with a vegan fiber derived from yeast.
