Italian food brand Sacla launched a new vegan mayonnaise this month at supermarkets Sainsbury’s and Co-Op and with online market Ocado across the United Kingdom. The company describes the new “free-from” (or allergen-free) product as an “unbeatable thick, creamy, and indulgent recipe, [that tastes] like the market-leading mayonnaise.” The brand developed the new vegan product to capitalize on the growing £806 million ($1.1 billion) free-from market in the UK. “Food must be joyful,” Clare Blampied, Sacla UK managing director, said, “and there’s no compromise to taste or texture with our new free-from mayonnaise. We hope it’ll become a store cupboard staple in non-vegan households, too.” Stateside, a number of vegan mayonnaise brands such as Follow Your Heart’s Vegenaise, Hampton Creek’s Just Mayo, and Hellmann’s vegan-certified Carefully Crafted Dressing and Sandwich Spread are currently available, while Chilean startup The Not Company will debut its vegan mayonnaise—made with the help of artificial intelligence—at Walmart stores in 2019.
