Thousands of striking teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) were treated to vegan Tofurky sandwiches this week courtesy of animal-rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The teachers—who were taking a stand against unfair wages and school budget cuts—were met at the protest on Monday by PETA representatives handing out free sandwiches while holding signs that stated, “Tofurky for Teachers” and “No Mystery Meat Here—Free Vegan Sandwiches!” In September 2017, seven LAUSD schools adopted a vegan lunch pilot program and after positive responses from students, the district expanded the offering to 35 additional schools in December 2017. “The classroom is an important place to learn empathy, so PETA is eager to help fuel educators’ fight for their and their students’ rights,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said. “Many LAUSD students can enjoy delicious vegan meals, and PETA wants to offer that same benefit to their brave and hungry teachers.”
