Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish girl who has made international headlines for her fight to bring political action and attention to climate change, has been nominated by three Norwegian MPs for a Nobel Peace Prize. Thunberg gained international attention after her passionate speech on climate change at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poland, and for starting the Fridays for Future movement which encourages students to strike from school to draw attention to the issue of climate change. The teen activist and her family are vegan and have given up air travel due to the damaging environmental effects of consuming animals and burning fuel. The School Strike for Climate Change, a campaign started by Thunberg which urges students to walk out of classes to encourage world leaders to make meaningful commitments to fight climate change, is scheduled to take place for the first time in the United States in New York City on March 15.
