On May 6, Lebanese food truck Roro’s: Modern Lebanese will be hitting the streets of Washington, DC with an all-vegan menu for the month of May as part of Meatless May—a campaign to raise awareness of plant-based food. The new menu will include dishes such as Buffalo Cauliflower Wings (battered and deep-fried with house-made vegan tzatziki sauce); Falafel Burgers (two all-chickpea patties, special hummus sauce, turnip pickles, and onions on a toasted bun); Gyro Pita Wraps (gyro seitan, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and house-made vegan tzatziki sauce); and Chocolate-Covered Baklava (dark chocolate drenched filo pastry layers filled with chopped nuts and covered in orange blossom syrup). Owner Roro Asmar—who also runs a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Alexandria, VA—went vegan three years ago and is following in the inspiring footsteps of local Asian fast-casual hotspot Pow Pow, which revamped its menu to be fully vegan last May. “I’ve been fortunate enough to become friends with the amazing duo behind Pow Pow and after picking their brains and seeing the amazingly positive feedback they have received for their delicious plant-based menu, I decided it was time for me to join the vegan movement in DC as a vegan myself,” Asmar told VegNews. “The DC vegan scene is a smaller movement but one that is only building up steam with Pow Pow being one of the original vegan powerhouses along with Fare Well, Elizabeth Gone Raw, and NuVegan.” Asmar plans to add to the growing list of DC vegan eateries with the launch of plant-based shop Roro’s Pizzeria in the coming months.
