A Spanish burger restaurant has apparently created the best burger in the world. According to World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants, which recently released its list of the top 25 burgers globally, Hundred Burgers in Valencia took the crown, with its classic single and cheeseburger options named the very best in their field.

Despite this recognition, we think Hundred Burgers’ best offerings were overlooked. The restaurant’s meat burgers may have won, but its vegan options deserve the spotlight.

Hundred’s two vegan burgers—the Veggie Burger and the Superiority Burger—are both made with fresh, whole-food ingredients. Each features a quinoa, vegetable, and chickpea patty, served with salad and vegan cheddar cheese on Hundred’s own housemade vegan bread.

The Superiority Burger brings a bit of heat with gochujang sauce, while the Veggie Burger comes loaded with guacamole, pico de gallo, onion relish, and vegan mayo. (Note: when ordering, specify that you want vegan cheese, as both vegan patties are also available with slices of dairy cheese.)

Surprisingly, for a spot known for its meaty menu, burgers are not where the vegan options end. Hundred Burgers also offers nachos loaded with guacamole and pico de gallo; a vegan salad made with cherry tomatoes, strawberries, avocado, walnuts, and fruit vinaigrette; sweet potato fries; and hummus with veggie chips.

The rise of plant-based burgers

Hundred Burgers isn’t alone, either. If you’re in London, you can head to Bleecker, home of the world’s second-best burger, to try the Symplicity Burger, although this burger is vegetarian rather than plant-based. The third-place winner, Black Bear Burger, also in London, serves a fully vegan burger complete with vegan bun, vegan cheese, and vegan garlic mayo.

It’s no surprise that the world’s best burger restaurants are catering to vegans and vegetarians. Across Europe, flexitarianism is growing as more people cut down on meat for health and environmental reasons.

Burger joints are also responding to growing awareness around ultra-processed foods. It’s telling that Hundred Burgers is choosing to tempt diners with quinoa patties rather than plant-based meat substitutes.

That said, this isn’t the case everywhere (Black Bear Burger’s option is distinctly meaty), and it’s important to note that research suggests that plant-based meat is still significantly healthier than animal meat, red meat especially.

Still, it’s encouraging to know you can dine at one of the top burger restaurants in the world without ordering beef. Instead, you can feast on nachos, veggie patties in housemade buns, and all the sweet potato fries your heart desires.
