Vegan chain Plant Power Fast Food (PPFF) opened a new location this month on-campus at San Diego State University in California (SDSU) and, according to student-run media outlet The Daily Aztec, attracted more than 1,100 customers on opening day. PPFF opened its first location in San Diego’s Ocean Beach neighborhood before expanding north along the California coast to locations in Encinitas, Redlands, and at SDSU, with a Long Beach outpost currently in the works. The chain serves an array of vegan fast food, such as chicken nuggets, almond milk-based milkshakes, and classic burgers, including The Big Zac—a plant-based take on McDonald’s Big Mac named after PPFF co-founder Zac Vouga. “I’m actually surprised that (the food) is really good,” SDSU student Arlene Valdez said. “I’m not vegan or vegetarian, and I was kind of sketched out but it’s really, really good. I got the chicken sandwich and it literally tastes like chicken. I thought the flavor would be kind of dull like tofu or soy but it’s really flavorful.” Last year, Saudi Arabia’s vegan Prince Khaled Alwaleed bin Talal announced his partnership with PPFF and intent to open a location of the vegan eatery in the Middle East by 2020.
