In July, California-based vegan snack company Modern Pop will be launching avocado-based ice cream bars in six west coast divisions of supermarket chain Krogers. The frozen bars will be available in three flavors: Chocolate Oh Fudge, Mint Trip, and Cookies n’ Dream. Modern Pop was founded by husband-and-wife duo Brad and Julie Podolec, who were searching for a fruit-based, low-sugar snack they felt comfortable feeding their teething infant. When options fell short, they created their own. Their core line of frozen fruit bars are made of fruit such as mango, strawberries, raspberries, and pineapple, but the new line made with avocados offers a more indulgent treat that is also healthy. “Our original products are a line of ‘fruit first’ frozen fruit bars,” Julie Podolec told VegNews. “We’ve always wanted to extend our brand into more indulgent flavors, but for the life of us, we couldn’t figure out how to accomplish it. We had an ‘aha’ moment when it dawned on us that avocado—a fruit—could serve as a base for a line of more traditional ice cream type flavors.” In 2016, another vegan avocado-based ice cream line, Cado Desserts, debuted at 90 retailers in the Midwest, including Whole Foods, and recently expanded to additional retailers nationwide.
