San Antonio, TX-based family-run business Southern Roots Vegan Bakery recently launched a Holiday Cookie Bundle which is available for delivery nationwide. The bundle ($50) includes an assortment of seasonal cookie flavors with 16 cookies (four in each flavor): Oatmeal Raisin, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Double Chocolate Chip, and Sprinkle Sugar Cookies. The eatery also launched seasonal Pumpkin Spice Donuts. The online bakery was founded in 2018 by husband-and wife-team Marcus and Cara Pitts, who are also the master bakers. Southern Roots offers items such as brownies, red velvet doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, chocolate chip cookies, and Mary Lee’s lemon bundt cake, named after Cara’s 97-year-old grandmother.

“This is our favorite time of year, once fall rolls around in San Antonio, and we can all enjoy the traditional holiday flavors,” Cara Pitts, who creates all of the recipes for Southern Roots, said. “It’s always fun coming up with new goodies for our customers. We use real pumpkin in the Pumpkin Spice Donuts of course, but the spice is light, so they’re just moist, yummy vegan doughnuts that go perfectly with a cup of coffee. I also got to develop the recipe for our new sprinkle sugar cookies, which are part of the Holiday Cookie Bundle. Just like potato chips, no one can eat just one.”

The Pitts launched the vegan bakery after watching the documentary What the Health, which inspired them to go vegan. During this summer’s Black Lives Matter protests, the business saw a 100-percent spike in sales as more people nationwide turned to support Black-owned businesses. In addition to the Holiday Cookie Bundle, Southern Roots now offers a Kid at Heart Bundle ($55) filled with a variety of baked goods: a Mary Lee’s Lemon Cake, one fudge brownie, half a dozen assorted doughnuts, and one dozen cookies.

“Christmas is the time of year that we all want to indulge in our favorite holiday treats, and it brings us great joy to know that nobody has to sacrifice this year to maintain their commitment to the vegan lifestyle,” Marcus Pitts said. “It’s been a rough year for all of us, so we hope our new goodies can brighten everyone’s day.”
