United States-based grocery chain Sprouts Farmers Market recently launched its own vegan burgers. A part of the chain’s meat-dominant The Butcher Shop line, the new Plant Based Burger Patties are made using portobello mushrooms and feature pea protein, onion puree, and beets. Available at all Sprouts locations, the mushroom-based burgers retail for $5.99 for a package of two and can be found in the frozen meat section.
With more customers looking for healthier, plant-based options, the grocery chain’s private label and culinary team developed the patties as a “better-for-you” option with less saturated fat than similar meat alternatives.
“Since the beginning, Sprouts has focused on offering innovative products that taste good and are good for the planet,” Sprouts Culinary Director Matthew Pratta told VegNews. “Sprouts shoppers are enthusiastic about foods that offer unique attributes and visit our stores to find new products to incorporate into their diets, including plant-based items because of their health and environmental benefits. We developed these new plant-based patties to give customers a healthier, more nutritionally balanced option that offers a satisfying, great taste [and] that are easy to cook at home.”
Vegan at Sprouts
This year has seen an influx of new plant-based products offered at the grocery chain. This September, California-based brand Impossible Foods launched its plant-based burger at more than 350 Sprouts locations across 23 states. That same month, vegan brand Abe’s Muffins began rolling out its allergen-friendly muffins at the grocery chain with the launch of two seasonal flavors: Apple Cider and Cranberry Orange Zest. More recently, Cedarlane Foods launched new frozen meals—including Vegan Lasagna, enchiladas, and Lentil Shepherd’s Pie—at Sprouts under its Simply Plant Powered line.
As Sprouts continues adding more vegan products to its portfolio, the company has also launched a plant-based campaign filled with educational resources to help inform customers on the benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet.
