New grant program Eat the Change will donate $1 million over a three-year period to national and community-based nonprofits that promote planet-friendly, plant-based foods. The program was created by social entrepreneur Julie Farkas and Seth Goldman—founder of beverage company Honest Tea and vegan restaurant PLNT Burger and Chair of the Board at Beyond Meat. “There’s a lot of anxiety about what’s going on in the world,” Goldman said. “But there’s one part of our lives everyone is empowered to control, and that’s the food choices we make.”
Grants will be awarded to companies that best promote the program’s four core values: Eating with Intention (helping consumers learn about where their food is grown and how it is made); Fact-Based Science (promoting the link between food and climate change, particularly when it comes to plant-based diets, reducing waste, organic agriculture, water efficiency, sustainable packaging, and supporting biodiversity); Democratizing Planet-Friendly Diets (making plant-based foods more accessible and affordable); and Innovation. “Planet-friendly diets do not have to be economically or geographically exclusive,” Farkas said. “There are significant gaps in terms of information and access to planet-friendly diets, but we hope these grants will help close those gaps.”
Goldman and Farkas expect to award eight national grants of approximately $20,000 each and 15-20 grants to community-based organizations between $5,000 and $10,000 each. Grant applications will open from April 1 through May 15 for 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and grants will be awarded on August 1, 2020.
