This week, Support + Feed will expand to New York City to support struggling vegan restaurants and feed those in need during the COVID-19 outbreak. Founded by Maggie Baird, mother of vegan singer Billie Eilish, the initiative first launched in Los Angeles on March 27 where it works with 11 vegan restaurants which process weekly food orders from customers looking to support the cause and deliver them in a safe matter to hospitals, food shelters, housing and women’s shelters, senior centers, and police stations. In this way, the initiative supports local restaurants—allowing them to pay employees in these uncertain times—while feeding vulnerable populations.

In NYC—the city hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic—Support + Feed has partnered with three restaurants thus far: Beyond Sushi, By CHLOE, and Marty’s V Burger. Customers are encouraged to purchase gift orders from these businesses, which Support + Feed will turn into safe deliveries for those in need. “We wanted desperately to expand to NY to offer both some comfort to those in need and of course to help some of the plant-based restaurants there survive this. It has been more challenging to set up because of the unique issues there but we have some east coast volunteers helping us now so we are thrilled that we are up and running,” Baird told VegNews. “We hope to provide some assistance to other areas of the country and are now able to accept larger contributions to be able to help us do that. We are reaching out to restaurants and those in need who have contacted us and hope to be able to help more and more people and businesses.”
