To celebrate Black History Month in February, national non-profit organization Afro-Vegan Society (AVS) has launched Veguary. The month-long campaign offers a series of free programs highlighting the contributions of Black vegan trailblazers and challenging people to commit to vegan living for February.

The event will include more than 20 Black vegan speakers, including Olympian Seba Johnson; Milton Mills, MD, who was featured in the vegan documentary What the Health; celebrity chef Rain Truth; and certified holistic nutritionist Ruby Lathon. Some of the themes they will explore include the legacy of plant-based traditions in Black communities, plant-based health and wellness, making plant foods accessible in marginalized communities, and veganism as a part of a holistic world view to resisting oppression in all of its forms.

Taking the Veguary pledge
For those who commit to the Veguary pledge, AVS will also provide free resources, support, and community with vegan recipes, online cooking demonstrations, virtual education sessions, daily emails, live Q&A sessions, exclusive prizes and discounts from vegan brands, and interactive check-ins through the Veguary Facebook group.

“Veguary is a free 28-day pledge program encouraging people from marginalized communities to commit to vegan living for the month of February,” Brenda Sanders, AVS Executive Director, told VegNews. “We wanted to commemorate Black History Month by highlighting the accomplishments of Black vegan trailblazers while also providing education, resources and support to help our pledges transition to a healthier, kinder, more sustainable way of living.”
