Starting today, coffee chain Peet’s Coffee will launch the fully vegan Everything Plant-Based Sandwich as part of its spring menu at participating locations nationwide. The new sandwich features a Beyond Meat Breakfast Sausage patty, mung bean-based folded JUST Egg, melted dairy-free cheddar cheese, and comes served on an everything bagel thin. “We are thrilled to join forces with Beyond Meat and JUST Egg to bring Peetniks a delicious breakfast sandwich made with all plant-based ingredients,” Lori Fulmer, Peet’s Senior Food Research and Development Manager, said. “As consumers continue to demand more plant-based options we have expanded beyond alternative dairy, setting our sights on a plant-based breakfast sandwich that is not only better for the planet, but also every bite as delicious as your typical animal-based breakfast sandwich.”

Peet’s also offers a variety of plant-based milk options, including oat milk which it will feature on the spring menu as part of two beverages: the Horchata Cold Brew Oat Latte and the Golden Spice Cold Brew Oat Latte (which is not vegan as it contains honey).

Peet’s vs Starbucks

Peet’s introduced the Everything Plant-Based Sandwich as a fully vegan option to differentiate itself from other chains, such as Starbucks, which have launched sandwiches made with plant-based meat accompanied by dairy cheese and chicken eggs. “Peet’s Coffee isn’t just satisfied with checking the box on plant-based,” Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Eat Just, said. “They understand the importance of delivering a high-quality, delicious offering for their consumer and we couldn’t be more thrilled that JUST Egg met their expectations.”

Starbucks launched the Impossible Breakfast Sandwich at all of its locations in June. This sandwich features a plant-based Impossible Sausage patty, dairy cheese, and chicken eggs, and cannot be ordered vegan as the sandwiches at Starbucks are not made to order.

However, Starbucks might soon be following in Peet’s footsteps with a new menu item: the Plant-Powered Breakfast Sandwich. Last fall, Starbucks tested this fully vegan sandwich—made with an Impossible Sausage patty, vegan cheese, mung bean-based eggs, and served on an English muffin—at one store in Issaquah, WA. In January 2021, Starbucks expanded the test region of the Plant-Powered Breakfast Sandwich to Dallas. This month, Starbucks added Oatly oat milk and the vegan Chickpea Bites & Avocado Protein Box to its nationwide menu.
