Olympia Auset, longtime vegan and founder of South Los Angeles’ first organic produce service SÜPRMARKT, is launching the first vegan festival in the city’s South Central neighborhood. SÜPRFEST will take place on October 19 in Leimert Park, adjacent to the Taste of Soul festival—which brings in more than 50,000 attendees—in an effort to attract more people. SÜPRFEST aims to help improve the community’s health by offering free and reduced access to vegan food from some of LA’s best establishments, including Jackfruit Cafe, Compton Vegan, Todo Verde, and Divine Dips, along with yoga, art therapy, soundbath practitioners, and free workshops and cooking demos throughout the day provided by South LA Wellness. The speaker lineup includes vegan celebrities such as actresses Tabitha Brown and Angela Means, Olympic athlete Seba Johnson, and chef Jenné Claiborne. “LA has so many vegan options but that’s not the case in places like South Central,” Auset said. “This gives this community a chance to try great food that’s good for them at prices they can afford, and meet the people dedicated to wellness and transformation in their community.” Since 2016, Auset has been working to provide weekly produce pop-ups and delivery services to make it easy and affordable to eat well in LA’s food deserts. Through her low-cost organic grocery service SÜPRMARKT, Auset has served more than 30,000 pounds of organic produce in South Central and beyond. Her next step is to re-open one of the area’s oldest health-food stores as a plant-based marketplace.
