A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows that animal-based proteins and fats are associated with higher mortality rates. The study, which followed more than 100,000 people over the course of 20 to 26 years, showed that heavy consumption of animal proteins increase mortality rates, including deaths related to cardiovascular and cancer issues. Conversely, lower mortality rates were associated with low carbohydrate and high protein diets consisting of mostly plant-based fats and proteins. The findings also echo previous studies that have shown the link between red and processed meat with colorectal and lung cancer.
