Technology company Apple named Froggipedia—an augmented-reality app that allows users to virtually dissect frogs—2018’s iPad App of the Year. Created by India-based company Designmate, the animal-friendly app gives users the ability to explore the life cycle and anatomical details of amphibians without causing harm to living creatures. Users learn how a frog grows from a single-celled egg in water to a tadpole which metamorphoses into a frog. Users can then dissect and observe the complex structure of the animals’ various organ systems on an Apple device using an Apple pencil or a finger. As technology advances, educators in California and other states have started using non-animal educational tools such as interactive apps and computer programs to teach biology.
