Apple Tells All
Apple’s new website aims for total environmental transparency.
September 30, 2009
Apple recently launched a website with a complete analysis of its greenhouse gas emissions in an attempt to provide full environmental disclosure to consumers and critics. The site details all emissions associated with its products—such as Mac computers, iPhones, and iPods—including the extraction of raw materials, manufacturing processes, transportation, and average consumer use. This move comes after previous criticism from Greenpeace about its use of toxic chemicals and its poor showings in environmental rankings. Apple says that its green data is unique, because it includes the greenhouse gas emissions produced after a product is purchased and used. This data assumes a four-year lifespan for Macs and a three-year lifespan for iPhones and iPods.
