Plant-based food groups dominate a new food pyramid released by Nutrition Australia, an organization that promotes healthy eating to Aussie citizens. But unlike the US, the Australian Healthy Eating Pyramid places vegetables and legumes as the foundation and most important food items to consume. Higher up, soymilk and tofu have been added to the meat and dairy section as suitable options because “plant foods contain a wide variety of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.” This new visual follows the Australian Dietary Guidelines released in 2013. Stateside, the Dietary Guidelines Advistory Committee is finalizing its 2015 recommendations for Americans.
